Google AI Overviews in Hong Kong: what is confirmed, what to do
By Kenny Tang · 2026-10-08 · 4 min read

In short
- Google's help page lists Hong Kong and Chinese (Traditional) among the places and languages where AI Overviews are available, so your customers can already see them.
- Google says there is no special optimisation for AI Overviews. What counts is being indexed, snippet-eligible, helpful and clearly trustworthy.
- Measure carefully: AI Overviews traffic is folded into the normal Web results in Search Console, and Google decides when an overview appears.
What Google actually confirms
An AI Overview is a short, AI-written summary that appears at the top of some Google results, with links to dig deeper. Google's AI Overviews help page says they are available to all users in a listed set of countries, territories and languages, and Hong Kong and Chinese (Traditional) are both on that list.
Two other points from the same page matter for planning. First, Google's systems decide when to show an overview, namely when generative AI would be especially helpful, so a search that triggers one today may not tomorrow. Second, a user can move from an overview into AI Mode and ask follow-up questions in a conversation, with the original search carried over.
What the documentation does not give us is a Hong Kong-specific figure, such as how often overviews appear for local searches. We have not seen a source we trust for that, so we will not quote one. If someone offers you a precise "percentage of Hong Kong searches", ask where it comes from.
How a page ends up as a link
Google's guidance on AI features describes how both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out": issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources to assemble an answer. The practical effect is that your page may be linked for a side question you never targeted, because it answers one part of the topic well.
The eligibility rules are plain. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The foundations it lists are the familiar ones: let Google crawl the page, write helpful content for people, give a good page experience, and keep structured data accurate and matching the visible text.
Microsoft's guidance on AI search answers points the same way from a different engine. It describes AI systems pulling concise, self-contained passages from pages, which fits the fan-out idea: each section should make sense on its own.
What to do on your site
- Check you are not blocking yourself. Google's controls such as
nosnippet,max-snippetandnoindexalso limit what can appear in AI features. Review them on pages you want found. Note that robots.txt is for managing crawler traffic; Google says it is not a way to keep a page out of Google. - Answer questions in the first sentence. Put a clear question in a heading and the direct answer beneath it. Our guide to FAQ pages that AI cites covers the format.
- Show who is behind the content. Google's helpful content guidance uses "who, how and why": make authorship clear, explain how the content was made, and be honest about why it exists. Real projects, such as those in our portfolio, are stronger than general claims.
- Cover both languages properly. If your customers search in English and Traditional Chinese, each language version needs its own complete, natural content rather than a thin translation.
- Keep facts consistent. Business name, address, services and contact details should match across your site and profiles.
Measuring what you cannot isolate
Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report. There is no separate AI Overviews line, so you cannot read your overview traffic directly.
A workable approach is to track the questions that matter to your business. Each month, search them in Google on desktop and mobile, in English and Chinese, and record whether an overview appears and which sites it links. Note the date, because results change. Compare that log with impressions and clicks for the same pages in Search Console. This is simple, repeatable and honest about its limits.
Wrap-up
AI Overviews are available in Hong Kong and in Traditional Chinese, but Google gives no special route into them. The reliable plan is the dull one: crawlable pages, direct answers, visible expertise and consistent facts, tracked with a small monthly check. Frequently Asked Questions
General
Are Google AI Overviews available in Hong Kong?+
Google's help page lists Hong Kong among the places where AI Overviews are available, and Chinese (Traditional) among the supported languages. Google decides query by query whether to show one, so you will not see an overview on every search.
Do I need special markup to be included in AI Overviews?+

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?+
Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report. It is not reported as a separate line, so treat it as part of your overall search data.
